Statement of Significance

The site represents the importance of education and a way of life no longer practised. It has an association with the early settlers.

History

The area north east of Lake Grace was first settled in 1919. No school was available for the children, so the children's education took place in the lounge of AB Thompson's new dwelling in 1923. In 1924, the recently vacated former school room from Lake Grace was relocated to a paddock on WD Boulton's farm. Boulton's farm was the centre of the district, and no child had to travel more than 8 miles. The children usually travelled by horse and cart, subsidised by the Government at sixpence per child. The students originally comprised of 2 Thompsons, 3 Merediths and 3 Duckworths. In 1927 the school students and teachers enjoyed a day's outing to White Cliffs. In July 1937, the name was changed from North East Lake Grace School to Beenong School. In 1940, the school closed due to low attendance. It was an Education Department requirement that a minimum number of 8 children was needed to retain a school teacher and keep a school open. Often the small country schools opened and closed a number of times depending on that requirement. When the school closed, the Beenong branch of the Farmer's Union Progress tried to retain the school building as a meeting place. However they were unsuccessful, and the Lake Biddy branch of the Farmer's Union bought the school room in 1942. They dismantled it and re-erected it to provide a school at Buniche.

Values

· The place has historical value for its association with the Fremantle Goal.

· The place has associations with the establishment of the railway network to the Eastern Goldfields during the gold boom of the 1890s.

· The place forms part of system of reservoirs and dams established to provide water for the steam engines that once operated on the railway; a function which is no longer practised.

Physical Description

‘45000 cubic metre capacity natural rock catchment with a concrete dam wall and rock catchments across the rock face. It is 7.31 metres deep, covers 24 hectares of rock catchment area and 12 hectares of earth catchment area.’

History

‘The water reserve was created in 1925. In 1945 the Lake Grace Road Board wrote to the Water Authority requesting compensation for having to cart water. The same request was made in 1946, suggesting Dingo Rock, South Lake Grace, Newdegate, and the lakes district for possible key water supply sites. At a ratepayers meeting in March 1946, it was resolved that the secretary request the Water Authority to prepare plans to be submitted for action prior to summer 1947, including the Dingo Rocks catchment. In April 1946, the Water Authority advised that the expansion of the districts water supplies was in abeyance due to shortage of manpower and materials. By 1947, the towns doctor, Dr Margaret Clarke made a formal compliant about the water supply on Lake Grace. A special meeting was called in July 1947, attended by Mr Doney the Minister for Public Works and Labour, and Mr Nalder, the MLA for the district. The chairman of the Road Board, Mr Elliott, presided. The subject under discussion was the water supply and among the recommendations was the issue of Dingo Rocks which could provide a water supply for the local settlers who were needing to cart water long distances. Elliott strongly recommended a further inspection of Dingo Rock in view of the excellent catchment potential. In November 1947, the Beenong area was dependent on the water in the railway tank.’ ‘In correspondence from PWD to the Roads Board in February 1950, it was stated that Dingo Rocks was marked for attention. When Mr Elliott was re-elected as Chairperson of the Board for the 16th consecutive term, in May 1950, he reported that works were progressing at Dingo Rocks.’ ‘The prisoners from Fremantle Gaol constructed the 7 metre rock and cement wall to catch the run off from Dingo Rock. All the work was done by hand with picks, shovels and blasting. The prisoners camped at the site and the work was supervised by the Public Works Department.’ ‘The Dingo Rock Dam was opened on 23rd July 1952 by Victor Doney, MLA.’

History

One of the first priorities of the early settlers was to establish a school for their children. The government provided schools after applications were received for the relevant communities who could substantiate a need and a suitable number of children. Once a Government school was established, a minimum number of 8 students was required to be maintained to keep the school open. School first operated in Buniche from T Davies house as an assisted school. Later a school was built near Buniche Government Dam. It was the former Beenong School that the local farmers reassembled in Buniche. It was open between 1940 and 1946. The teachers for the 21 students during that time were Miss Alga, Mrs Slade and Mrs Bridgers. Sometime after it closed, the building was reloaded to loc 111 between Lake Biddy and Newdegate. A plaque was erected in 1983.

Statement of Significance

The site represents a way of life no longer practised, and significant associations with settlers in the district.

Physical Description

The hall was a timber framed and corrugated iron clad structure measuring 35' x 40' and cost £200. The tongue and groove floor boards were of a high standard for dancing.

History

After the establishment of the dam in the early 1920s, by 1928 the community at North Burngup was such that a hall was constructed to provide for a community venue. Many memorable events took place at the hall; the annual Christmas Tree party, 50th wedding anniversary, wedding breakfasts; birthday celebrations, send-offs and welcome-homes for the World War Two personnel, and Junior Farmer meetings. Margaret Fisher's 21st birthday. Dances were a regular social event with the local children polishing the floor on Saturday morning with Shellite and sawdust. Jack Wilson and Vince Lucas ran pictures shows for a few years. Three anthill tennis courts adjoined the hall, and were the venue for regular matches with visiting clubs. Soccer was popular n the district in the early days, and the ground was established about 200 metres east of the hall. Later cricket became very popular, and the cricket pitch was incorporated in the soccer ground. The salmon gum logs under the shade of salmon gum trees on the oval boundary was a popular spectator position. Bough sheds provided shelter and a venue for afternoon tea. In 1932, the railway line from Lake Grace to Karlgarin and Hyden opened through the North Burngup district. The railway line passed some 5 miles to the west of the North Burngup settlement, due in part to the availability of water at Pingaring Rock. The North Burngup settlement diminished after Pingaring Siding was established and a town subsequently focussed around the railway siding from the mid 1930s. Although a supper room was added to the hall in 1943, moves were already taking place to focus the social activities in Pingaring. The hall was tendered, and Harry Trundle dismantled it and built a shearing shed on his farm.

railhead. From 1913 Stileman was Chief Engineer of the WAGR, and his plan proposed the extension of the trunk line eastwards from Corrigin through to Forrestania which was planned for expansion under the Empire Immigration Scheme, sharing costs. In 1926 the Wagin line extended eastwards to a railhead at Lake Grace. Considerable lobbying from the Karlgarin community vied for an extension of the Corrigin line as outlined in the Stileman Plan. By 1927 fierce discussions were taking place. The motion to construct the trunk line east from Kondinin was put before Parliament in 1928. The Stileman Plan was subsequently defeated. As late as 1929 surveys were continuing for the Kondinin extension, and late in 1929 the Karlgarin town was surveyed, but in June 1930 the railway gangs commenced constructed at the Lake Grace end of the spur line to Karlgarin and Hyden, with Dornock a siding along that line. The railway line did not come to Mordetta Siding until 1931, and the trains first ran between Lake Grace and Karlgarin in 1932. When the siding was opened in April 1933, it was named Dornock after a village in Scotland. The train also catered for passengers in the early days of its service. The passenger train service ended in the early 1950s when the Railway bus took over. Local farmers carted their grain to the siding. The grain was in bags sewn at the top and loaded into closed wagons for cartage to Fremantle. In 1937, CBH built a bulk bin (capacity 1300 tons), at the siding. The siding consisted of the bin, weighbridge (where the bin attendant slept) stockyards for loading stock, and a goods shed where farmers collected their goods. in 1956 a PRB bin was constructed, and there was also a pig pen for open storage. The bin was closed and demolished in 1973. The railway line was closed on the 30 June 1957, however on the 15 January 1960, the line was re-instated for a trial between Hyden and Lake Grace. It has remained operation for the cartage of grain and superphosphate since that time. A plaque was erected to mark the site in 1992, and trees have been planted.

History

Fred Jensen's family came from Denmark via England in 1908 and took up land in Tincurrin (Dorakin- Shire of Wickepin). Fred took up land in East Pingaring in 1937 and established a bush shed where he lived for a number of years before marrying and continuing to live there until this place was built on another section of his land which he developed over the years. Fred's track to his settlement was made by rock siting, and many years later the surveyor's confirmed the existing track which subsequently became an extension of Commonwealth Rd. Statement of Significance

The place represents associations with generations of Lake Biddy community members during the time it was the centre of the social and community life in the town and district

Physical Description

Timber framed, weatherboard clad with a corrugated-iron gable roof and skillion kitchen roof at the rear. The original outhouse toilets are still insitu.

History

With the opening of the railway line, money was raised by public subscription to start work on the Lake Biddy Hall. The hall committee, chaired by Austin Powell, organised cropping programs on the townsite reserve, which provided most of the building costs. After the townsite was surveyed in 1925, the land for the cropping programs was resumed from the Sandells and Curwoods. The hall opened on 12 June 1926 with a fancy dress ball. The first school in Lake Biddy was conducted in the hall in 1927. The local musicians provided the music for the frequent dances at the hall. The Bush Brotherhood conducted services, and the Methodists also held services at the hall. In the early 1930s a busy bee resulted in the construction of the supper room. During World War Two, the VDC instruction was given at the hall by Ernie Thackrah. In the 1960s the Lake Biddy Pistol Club with the range in the hall, held its club meets on Sunday mornings. In the early 1980s the hall was vested in the lake grace Shire, who renovated the place. Jack Sandell's tree was planted in 1989 to commemorate his services as the school bus driver, on the day of his retirement. One of the last functions in the hall was in 1989 when a retirement party was held for Walter Keighley.
